Fixing PS4 Network Error NW-31453-6 – All Solutions

The PS4 network error message NW-31453-6 is quite common. It can pop up when a player tries to connect to PSN but it fails. The error message sometimes reads as “delayed server response” or as follows:

“The connection to the server has been lost. There might have been a problem connecting to the network, or the PlayStation Network or the server of the service provider might be temporarily busy”

The NW-31453-6 error message usually simply means that the PlayStation Network is down for some reason, or there is something wrong with your ISP’s servers which are stopping you connecting. Manually configuring the MTU settings of your PS4 to 1453 or 1473 is the most common way to solve this problem:

  • Go to Settings…..Network.
  • Go to Set up Internet Connection
  • Configure all settings as Default or Automatic
  • Switch to Manual for MTU Settings
  • Set MTU to 1453 or 1473.

There are a small minority of cases where manually setting your MTU doesn’t fix this problem. We will also go through some other options to try for those that can’t get the MTU solution to work. Let’s go through MTU settings first though.

Manually Configuring Your MTU Settings To Fix PS4 Error NW-31453-6

The most successful method of fixing this error message seems to be manually configuring the MTU settings of your PS4. This allows the majority of the users who try it to get back online.

MTU stands for Maximum Transmission Unit and refers to the maximum size of any data packet in bytes that can be sent across a network. It is normally set to 1500 by default for the PS4, but it is possible to manually alter this setting to a lower value, and this is what seems to solve the problem.

Here are the steps to manually set your MTU value for the PS4:

  • Go to Settings…..Network…..Set Up Internet Connection
  • Click Custom
  • Click through all the setting as they are without changing them, until you get to MTU Settings.
  • For MTU, switch to Manual
  • Enter 1453 or 1473 for the MTU value. If one doesn’t work, try the other.
  • Finish Setup and Test Connection. The PS4 should now be able to get online.

NB. If the Network Sign in on the Connection Test still fails after you put in the new MTU value, then don’t worry, just attempt to sign back into PSN manually and it usually works. The rest of the connection test usually runs through as normal after making this change.

What If This Solution Doesn’t Work?

The MTU solution above seems to work for the vast majority of PS4 users who try it. However, in a few random cases it doesn’t seem to work.

Here are some other things you can try:

  • Try running through the MTU option a few times. A few users found it only worked after 2 or 3 attempts.
  • Try quick resetting/restarting your PS4 and router.
  • Try full resetting your router and PS4, powering them off fully and unplugging them for 15 minutes before plugging them back in.
  • Try using some kind of Port Forwarding on your router to make sure your PS4 is fully opened up to the internet and not having any traffic blocked by the router. DMZ is our preferred method for games consoles. Here are the very quick steps to configure DMZ:
      • Get the MAC address of your PS4 (Connection Settings/Status).
      • Log into your router by typing it’s IP address in any browser (often 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) and the password.
      • Find DMZ Settings under Security or Advanced or similar.
      • Enter or select your PS4’s MAC address and to place it in the DMZ.
      • Save settings and close. See our full article on DMZ Settings for more detailed steps.
  • Try also factory resetting your router, pressing the reset button or pin that’s usually underneath or on the side.
  • Also try resetting your PS4 settings back to default in Safe Mode. See the video below for a how to do it. You need to enter Safe Mode by pressing and holding the power button for 7 seconds when the PS4 is off, and selecting Option 4 – Default Settings. This doesn’t delete any data.
  • Also try the Rebuild Database option in Safe Mode to fix any corrupted files.
  • You can also try Safe Mode options 6 or 7 (Initialize or full Reinstall) as a last resort. You will lose data on your PS4 doing this though so be sure to back up what you need.
  • For all of the Safe Mode suggestions we have just made, see this video just below for how a demo of how to use Safe Mode for the PS4.
  • Check the status of PSN online. It may be busy or down with maintenance or technical difficulties.
